Parents often think of young adults as being ready to launch into career, college, and take care of themselves only because they are chronological adults. The change from living at home to independent living is not an easy transition. Many young adults to ready to make this change. Many struggling young men and young women are emotionally ill-prepared, they overwhelmed, and lack the skills necessary for independent living.
Some older teens and young adults struggle to transition into the college or work place environment. Sometimes they do not possess the essential interpersonal and independent living skills to succeed in adult relationships, whether at school or at work. Additionally, financial pressures are more intense than they ever dreamed. All too often young adults are naive and have unrealistic hopes of financial self-support and real independence.
Many young men and women feel thrown into a world not realizing they lack the skills to survive or succeed. Young adults need coaching to face the hard realities adulthood.
The purpose of our independent living programs are to assist (coach) young adults to the responsibility for their issues, learn new coping skills, and develop greater confidence in moving down the pathway to successful adulthood. Our independent living programs serve young adults, both men and women, age 18 to 28, who are having problems managing the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
Choosing the best indepent living program for a young adult is most likely one of the most important decisions you can ever make. This decision can last a lifetime, bringing forth power and prosperity. You need to have as much information as possible before you make this decision. By gathering information about the different programs this decision can be made with confidence and restore hope.
Each young adult and family that we work with develops an independent living plan that is completely customized to the specific needs of the student.

Many of our students enter At The Crossroads after completing a short-term residential treatment center or therapy program. Sometimes young people need specific life skills traning before returning home. After a wilderness therapy program, a substance abuse treatment center, or behavioral - therapeutic program, you might need a "next step" program to gain "real-life" success. The tightly structured treatment centers and programs offer great support while a young adult is in crisis, but before they are ready for full independent living, an independent living aftercare program is essential for long term success.
Our independent living programs are what is missing in the short-term therapeutic intervention programs. Our program developed after witnessing too many young adults fail after leaving intensive treatment. Doing "real life" is not always easy after short-term treatment and "real life" coaching is necessary. When young adults leave the short-term intensive treatment they are immediately faced with a ton of important choices to make.
The At The Crossroads Independent Living Program gives young adults a little extra support while to make independent life choices. While at At The Crossroads our student continue to receive life skills coaching while they make "independent life choices". They are required to maintain their own apartment, get and keep a job, go to school, and pay bills. They have many freedoms of living on their own, but also the support of independent living program counselors to help coach them toward sustained success.
At The Crossroads will tailor the independent living skills treatment program to you or your child's unique needs. There will be a team of counselors dedicated to helping achieve success no matter what behavioral, substance or skills issues are present. Continue the personal growth and positive changes while living independently, the perfect balance, with At The Crossroads.
